Everyone knows that the plastic family is very large, and its "members" permeate every aspect of our lives. Among them, PET and PE are just one word apart, do you know them all?

Part 1 The lifetime of PET and PE

PET， The full name is polyethylene terephthalate, abbreviated as "polyester" in Chinese. This material has the characteristics of high strength, good transparency, non toxicity, impermeability, light weight, and high production efficiency. It is commonly used in food, beverage packaging, personal care products, and other fields. The most widely used are plastic water bottles and beverage bottles.

PE (polyethylene) is highly sensitive to chemical and mechanical reactions and can be processed using conventional molding techniques. Therefore, it has a wide range of applications, including food packaging, soft packaging films, and daily chemical containers.

Currently, PE is the most consumed type of plastic in China, accounting for a quarter of the global plastic production.

These two materials provide consumers with clean, safe, and convenient packaging options due to their excellent material properties and different specialized fields.

At the same time, the problems of plastic pollution and resource waste that come with massive consumption are also very severe.

PET is good everywhere, but it is difficult to degrade. The recycled rPET is mainly divided into fiber grade rPET and bottle grade rPET according to their morphology and purpose. At present, fiber grade rPET is the mainstream, used for downgrading and recycling to produce regenerated fibers as textile materials. However, once made into clothing, it is difficult to recycle again, and most of the waste is incinerated or landfilled.

The recycling of PE is limited by the fact that the finished product is mostly in the form of a soft film. A large amount of flexible packaging plastics, especially film bag plastics, are often buried, incinerated or directly discarded without recycling, with a recycling rate lower than PET.

Part 2 The Rebirth of PET and PE

The same level recycling of rPET, which means bottle to bottle food grade recycling, is currently a leading recycling path in the market. After consumption, PET bottles are processed through processes such as crushing, cleaning, dehydration, drying, sorting, and granulation to remove contaminants from waste bottles and increase viscosity, allowing rPET to regain food grade cleanliness and safety.

Bottle to bottle recycling, due to its application in the food industry, has more stringent technical difficulties and process standards. But its value has been increasingly recognized by more and more countries and companies, with governments and brand organizations actively formulating relevant policies and goals.

The recycling process of PE is relatively mature. After recycling, different colors, textures, and shapes of products can be regenerated through color matching and processing.

Excellent economy and diversity have helped PE extend the service life of materials and promote industry sustainability.
